Muhlenbergia capillaris, also commonly referred to as Pink Muhly Grass, can reach an impressive height as high as four feet tall and three feet wide when fully grown. My first encounter with the ornamental grass was near Dishui Lake in Nanhui, Pudong District, when I lived abroad in Shanghai, China, for one year. While experiencing the distinct seasons throughout the year, my favorite was Autumn which starts in September and ends in late November. During these months, the grass thrives entirely, displaying a bright range of purple to pink plumes. Upon my initial observation of Pink Muhly, I began photographing just the grass within the landscape. However, my attention soon shifted, compelled by the behavior of people experiencing Pink Muhly Grass. It evolved into a visual exercise in looking at people looking at themselves.
