Natural State

The word sonomama [そのまま], is a Japanese word meaning “just as you are'' or “in your natural state.” The meaning of “such as it is of itself,” sonomama is the theme: doing subtraction of photographs and making the subject clear. The photos were not technical, and the subjects are able to present themselves, whether they show their real self or not, it is their choice to present the way they would like to. The portraits are more about affection and embrace the subject’s features. The photo and the subject itself are like the mirror [kagami鏡] and the person in front of it. The mirror reflects the outer part most of the time, and sometimes fooling people around, distorting the way we are supposed to be, the reflection might not be your true self. Thus the photograph can be a device for either liberating or imprisoning our true selves
