Piedmont Topographics

In his photographs of the Piedmont, Powell explores the urban and rural geography of the region he calls home, documenting the ways in which time and the landscape can push back and reassert a new mark on human-made structures and topographies. Old walls and fencing are subsumed by ubiquitous native foliage to form a new textural tapestry. Construction detritus and evidence of new building contrast with worn structures and those still standing that have withstood the passage of time. Human activity, whether in the distant past or simply just outside the frame, is implied rather than captured directly, imparting a stillness that belies the passage of time and both the human interventions along with the reassertion of the natural environment on the regional topography.
