Ping Zhu Harnesses the Wild Energy of Tampopo

When looking for an artist to design the theatrical poster and cover for Juzo Itami’s “ramen western” Tampopo, the Criterion Collection turned to New York–based artist Ping Zhu, one of the most brightly expressive illustrators around. With her thick, flowing brushstrokes and the irrepressible sense of energy and movement in her artwork, she proved to be the perfect choice to convey the film’s buoyant, sensuous flavor.

In the latest episode of Studio Visits—an ongoing series of videos on Criterion’s web publication, the Current—Zhu welcomes viewers into her studio at a
converted pencil factory in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn, and offers an intimate look at at how she puts her magic to paper.
