A selection of images by Bay Area-based photographer Bo Ocean. Focusing on slice-of-life portraiture, their photographs serve as a portal into a world where Black people are not required to self-regulate emotions deemed objectionable and often felt in private.
Existing within the false conditions of emotional control while Black, these photographs create a space in which Black people are allowed to feel, lose control, and mourn. These photographs' intention comes from personal experience for Bo: being Black and diagnosed Bipolar II and refusing to be forced into their subjugation.
