Before I lived in New York, I spent years imagining it. I built a version of the city from photographs, movies, Pinterest boards and fragments of other people’s lives—a place I hoped would one day become mine.
Five years after moving from Cairo to New York for my MFA, I began drawing that imagined city again, this time from memory.
Postcards From the New York I Dreamed Up is a 30-day illustration series revisiting the places, people and ordinary moments that made up my life there. Each illustration is designed as a 4×6 postcard, borrowing the visual language of the souvenirs and snapshots we send home from somewhere we’ve been.
