RAW explores the instability of identity through abstract portraiture. Faces emerge from and disappear beneath layers of oil paint, existing between visibility and concealment, construction and collapse. Drawing from personal experience as a queer artist, the series considers the desire to be seen while questioning whether identity can ever be fully fixed or understood. Paint becomes more than a means of representation—it becomes flesh, emotion, structure, and the figure itself.
Influenced by an architectural understanding of construction and space, Raw treats oil paint almost as a building material: faces are assembled, destabilised, and rebuilt until identity becomes something fluid rather than fixed.
