Rerooted

Most of my life, I was influenced by two almost polar opposite cultures, Brazilian and Swedish, which would always lead me to feel inadequate in either of them.

After moving to the UK, I finally came to terms with the fact that belonging is related to a state of mind rather than to a physical place.
I decided to explore this idea by first photographing the rain forest in Bahia, Brazil. Then, I photographed the vast array of tropical plants on display in the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in London.

Later on, I arranged all these images based on their aesthetic connection rather than their chronological or geographical order. I realised that it was hard to tell where each picture was taken. I saw this as an analogy that to belong to a culture one does not need to be physically immersed in it.
