Submission Painting

Series #1

This series started with the idea that communication is more effective when the design is minimal. Having recently spent time travelling through Europe, Julian was inspired by his studies of classical and renaissance painters.
He recognized that in today’s world the elaborate nature of renaissance paintings contained elements that are no longer necessary. Contemporary paintings have shed the need to tell history, transcribe images of the time, and convey news.
Without these burdens, he was free to break down the core elements of classical paintings - ratios, form, figure, and texture- and use them to explore the idea of creating pieces that could work well to complement their environment, and act as a mirror to the audience. The result is an inclusive, and equal relationship between painter and audience.
