Shanghai Baishi Beauty Salon

In the “Shanghai Baishi Beauty Salon” series of still life
photography, I use the different chairs in the salon as clues to
record the passage of time. “Shanghai Baishi Beauty Salon”
opened in Doyers street 37 years ago. This hair salon was forced
to close on September 30, 2019, due to the gentrification
happening right now in Chinatown. Each chair in the photograph
has a different style, and the stylists often choose their favorite
chair to sit on during leisure time. Each chair almost resembles
the personality of each staff member. Capturing these chairs with
no people showing by the side also implies the sad story behind
the salon.
