Bone China Grenades

By late WW2, much of the industrial infrastructure of Japan had been destroyed by
Allied strategic bombing, and there was a growing shortage of raw materials due to allied naval
blockades and submarine warfare. Without the metals needed to create the traditional grenade,
the Japanese Navy developed a cheap, easy-to-make grenade made of ceramic . No need for
a pin. Just throw it and upon contact they would detonate. What is interesting here is who was
employed to make these grenades…Kilns famous for the production of traditional Japanese
pottery, Ancient companies such as Arita, Bizen and Seto were pressed into service.
