I started my Sleep project in 2023, after the birth of my daughter. It began as a series of small digital collages that I made on my phone, usually when my daughter was napping, and I’ve continued to work on it through to the present day. I decided to make the images about sleep, to tie the work thematically to this period in my life, but the project became more broadly about parenting as my daughter got older. Visually, I wanted the images to have a dreamy and nostalgic feel, so I used mostly vintage source materials. I juxtaposed playful children’s book illustrations with darker imagery, reflecting the joys of being a new parent, but also the fears and anxieties that come with caring for a child.
