In The Aristocracy of the Imperishables, I imagine a contemporary or future ruling class dressed in the grandeur of historical nobility. Drawing on the theatricality of aristocratic portraiture, I combine elaborate regalia with futuristic technology and elements of popular culture. These oil paintings explore how wealth and power preserve themselves, adopting new forms while maintaining familiar hierarchies. Beneath the jewels, ceremonial robes and absurd accessories are questions about entitlement, inequality and the confusion of having more with deserving more. Humour offers a way into this world, where the splendour of the surface gradually gives way to something more unsettling.
