The Bad Seed

This series of oil paintings explores the visual landscape of my move to Montreal near the end of the pandemic. This personal story is represented by plants trying to grow in shabby concrete environments, surviving against adversity, and existing where they can. The work also speaks more broadly to shifting financial and structural barriers to securing housing as a young adult trying to establish themselves in a city. These paintings show symbols of consumerism, such as the shopping cart, in narrative landscapes that question how our relationship to the city and the home-making process are becoming increasingly difficult.
