The Cost of Living is an ongoing body of work set in Toronto's financial district. At the heart of the city and bordered by Canada's largest transit hub, it is a place where the city's extraordinary diversity and deepest class divisions are condensed into searing clarity. The work serves to document the mosaic of life in this place and time, while using the environment as a surface upon which I have projected my ruminations of how we each negotiate living for today or sacrificing for an un-promised tomorrow; what we relinquish in pursuit of security, or fulfillment; the oppressive gravity of materialism; the arbitrary nature of what we consider wealth and status. I work exclusively with 35mm positive film, the qualities of which are apt to convey the dramas of colour and light that uniquely characterize this place.
