The Interval
My staged performance of waiting
Inspired by 1930s performers, cabaret and black-and-white cinema, The Interval imagines a backstage space between performances, where the spectacle of the stage gives way to something more private, and the performers exist beyond the roles they play.
Using large-scale charcoal drawings on canvas and life-sized paper cut-outs mounted onto MDF, I built my own theatrical set! The result is a scene that feels as though the audience has wandered somewhere they shouldn’t be.
I’m interested in the moments when performance pauses, when the characters are no longer quite on stage, but haven’t fully stepped away from their roles. The Interval sits within this in-between space, inviting the viewer to wonder what happens when the show stops and nobody is watching.
