Several years ago, I noticed that between 8:30 and 10:30am, the bridge down the road from my flat draws a beautiful, hard shadow across the bike path, freezing each person cycling past during their morning ride on a kind of natural stage. I began returning whenever I could, and kept coming back for two years.
What struck me first was the neighbourhood's diversity. Bos en Lommer, Amsterdam, was shaped in waves: Dutch working-class housing from the 1930s, Moroccan and Turkish guest workers in the 1970s, then students, artists and wealthier residents. The bridge shows all of it.
Some riders hurry, others drift. Through the seasons I noticed similarities too: good moods in the heat, gritted teeth in the cold, families and friends on a bike, and the irresistible urge to read text messages while on the go.
