Growing up in Chicago, my formative understanding of art was built within the walls of The Art Institute of Chicago. I spent time studying classical composition, form, and precision. However, my entire perspective on what art could be shifted when I experienced a Francis Bacon painting "Study for a Portrait" (1949) at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. Bacon's work taught me that an image does not need to simply record a subject. An image must capture psychological and kinetic friction, even if accidental. Since that time, I have sought raw, unedited energy in my work. In "The Telemetry of Ash," this pursuit of energy manifests as a state of aggressive dissolution. The piece tracks the ghost of a human silhouette, shattered, perhaps betrayed.
