The World’s Greatest Grain of Sand

I built an entire gallery for one ordinary grain of sand at Sculpture by the Sea in Sydney. A gilded frame, velvet, glass, lighting and a rope barrier, all inside a shipping container at the beach.

The grain came from Mackenzies. I didn’t carve anything into it. It was encased in epoxy and set in a holder, inside the frame, inside the gallery. Visitors were asked to press a button to light the display for fifteen seconds.

There’s a joke in the amount of effort involved, but I wanted to see whether that attention could change how people looked at something they would normally brush off their feet. The beach was full of sand. This grain had a gallery.

I’m Nate Don, a Bondi artist working as Procrastinatedon. The installation was shown from 16 October to 2 November 2026.

Installation photographs: Jordan Abram (@jordanabram).
