One of the consequences of the current real estate pressure in downtown São Paulo is the end of Favela do Moinho, the last major favela in the city’s central area. Around 850 families were forced to leave their homes so the government could turn the site into a public park.

The last resident remained there until September 15, 2026, when he had to leave the house he had built himself.

I photographed it from where I stood in this story: from the outside, on Engenheiro Orlando Murgel Viaduct, as a cyclist from Rio de Janeiro who has been cycling past there for three years and has always stopped to look.
