Where He Keeps Us

This photograph was not planned. It was a cold, rainy day, and we had spent the whole morning at urgent care. Afterward we stopped at the grocery store to pick up my husband's medicine and a snack, and while we waited for our ride I lifted my phone and took a picture of his eye — just his eye, close, the lashes I know better than my own.

Only later did I see what the camera had caught: reflected in his pupil are me, holding the phone, and our daughter beside me. I made it black and white because that is how the day felt, and how the truth of it looks.

Life has not been gentle with our family, and circumstances keep us apart more than we are together. But he carries us with him everywhere — in his eye, in his sight, at the center of everything he looks at. Where he keeps us is with him. Always.
