K.K. Barrett and Kid Koala Bring “Nufonia Must Fall” to Life on Stage

kkbarrett-kidkoala

Eric San (aka Kid Koala) and frequent Spike Jonze collaborator K.K. Barrett recently adapted San’s 2003 graphic novel “Nufonia Must Fall” for the stage. Barrett describes the show as “a live silent film with live performance, live editing, live sound effects, live music played by a plethora of instruments by Eric”.

The story follows a robot who wants to write love songs to the girl he likes but is unable to sing. The characters in the original comic were re-created as puppets, and the comic panels were turned into 12 miniature sets. For three nights in a row, during the Luminato Festival, the story was performed while Kid Koala and the Afiara String Quartet provided the sounds.

Love to see this performed, hope it comes to Vancouver. Watch the video below documenting the artists’ process!
