Camera Stories is an on-going series where we ask photographers to tell us about their favourite camera, and give us the story behind one meaningful image they captured with it. This instalment features New York City-based artist Thomas Polcaster.
My best friend found a Canon PowerShot somewhere in her parents’ house a few years ago, and she started bringing it out to parties. She casually recommended I get one, so I found mine on eBay for like 20 bucks. I look for trust and vulnerability in my subjects, and this camera almost makes it too easy.

People are so intimidated by large and expensive cameras, but are willing to do anything when I pull out my PowerShot. It also allows me to be quite sneaky when shooting in public. When I took the photo of my friend on a swing, we were just walking home from a nice day at the beach. I’m constantly surprised and inspired by the beautiful images I can create with something so disposable.
