Paintings by Irish artist Fintan Switzer. Paying tribute to Berlin’s Grunewald forest, Switzer explores the concepts of German Expressionism and turn-of-the century themes and clichés of the time, specifically the struggle between the rational and the irrational. The series features an archetypal ‘Doctor’ and female ‘Orphan” character. As Switzer explains:
“While all the works are clearly set in a by-gone era, they still contend with themes of the modern day. Particularly the idea that emancipation, feminine or otherwise, doesn’t always conform to our assumed notions about it, which are, for the most part, a patchwork of fairytale and myth.”
