“iye” by Eric Cheung Photographed by Sebastian Palencia

Eric Cheung’s new solo dance work, “iye”, continues on from his previous short film “E_GO”, further exploring the concepts of ego and identity. The piece examines the ego’s ability to manipulate, warp, and create turmoil, and these ideas are represented as distortions within the movements throughout. Ultimately “iye” is an inward journey, a struggle, to find a clear picture of oneself. Cheung, a Vancouver-based dancer, originally from Calgary, will be performing the exciting work at KW STUDIOS (#10 111 Hastings St. W, Vancouver) on November 19th. I’ve seen little bits of the work in progress, and believe me, you don’t want to miss it!

The images here are a collaboration with photographer, Sebastian Palencia, created as a direct responses to the four different arcs within “iye”: Balance, Infinite, Control, Distort. The garments are by designer Spencer Badu and the project was made as part of the Made in BC Dance on Tour Creative Residency.
