Morgan Ashcom (previously featured here and here) is a Charlottesville, VA-based artist. His recent series and subsequent photobook, “What the Living Carry”, offer a glimpse into the fictional town of Hoys Fork. Drawing on memories of his own rural upbringing, Ashcom joins photographs taken in a diverse range of locations, a series of type-written letters, a single channel video, a hand-drawn map, and interactive sculptures and installations to piece together an elaborate portrait of a town that does not actually exist. With the work, Ashcom aims to “pose questions about the role of myth, generational inheritance, and environment in the construction of identity.”
