Yellow Peril Supports Black Power

Our friends have launched a fundraising platform YPSBP (Yellow Peril Supports Black Power) which features t-shirt designs by artists, largely from the Asian community, contributing their talents to raise money for Black community causes. The name of the site is drawn from signage used by Asians at activist gatherings to promote solidarity and support for the Black community, dating all the way back to the 60’s.

All proceeds generated from the site will be donated (proof will be provided) to Black initiatives with clear messaging about which organizations have received the donations and the amount.

The project is launching with t-shirts by Kenta Goto, So Youn Lee, and Jeremy Karl, with more to come! You can check out the t-shirts below along with some descriptions about the designs and where the funds will be donated.

“In tribute to Emory Douglas’ work as the creative force behind the Black Panthers movement. The Black Power symbol of the raised fist is shown wrapped in smoke. The incense smoke represents the Asian support and spiritual presence.  The use of incense exists in almost all Asian cultures.  It is used in ceremony, cleansing, healing and spiritual strength in battle. Together we fight the war against racism. Black Lives Matter.”

All proceeds from this tee will be donated to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund

“Inspired by the 1960’s symbolic ‘Yellow Peril Support Black Power’ poster, the tiger and panther reunited. From 1969 the rally for ‘Free Huey Newton’ and the protest over ‘Justice for George Floyd’ in 2020, the union against racism between Asians and African Americans have been standing together for justice. The aging effect on the graphic represents the history of the union and friendship. United, we can make a better future. Black Lives Matter.”

“The goal of this collab graphic/project, was really the result of a conversation between black and asian designer/artists. I think the saying “yellow peril supports black power”, has strength and power and is a great starting point for inquiry conversations into solidarity between BIPOC groups. The youth can be empowered by aligning with this saying. Same thing goes with the symbols we’ve used, there’s more abstraction, more conversations. We felt the need to create new symbols, inspired by historical messages to hopefully create new systems of support between different minorities.”

All proceeds from this tee will be donated to the Anti Police-Terror Project
