“Permit Me Voyage” by Photographer Christian Michael Filardo

Christian Michael Filardo is a Filipino American photographer, poet, and sculptor based in Richmond, Virginia. Their work revolves around the nuances of daily life, capturing quiet details that might otherwise go overlooked and creating visual narratives by grouping disparate images. In addition to their photography, Filardo writes critically for PHROOM and is co-founder of the Richmond-based art space, Cherry.

Loosely inspired by Jame’s Agee’s book of poetry and the Hart Crane poem of the same name, Filardo’s recent series, “Permit Me Voyage”, plays with perception while commenting on human existence within contemporary society. Curating the real world into something new through the sequencing of images, the series exists as what Filardo describes as, “an alternate dream universe for the viewer to traverse.”

“Guided tour through built world, galactic blueprint unknown, obstacles many but surmountable. Plane of existence similar but slightly altered from reality. Navigable albeit the language is new. To go or not go at all? Permit me voyage, Love, into your hands.”
