Photographer Spotlight: Andrés Vargas

A selection of images by Guatemala City-based photographer Andrés Vargas. Drawn from various bodies of work made in different locations throughout the Guatemalan territory, his images often feature seemingly insignificant scenes from daily life, while exploring his interest in the sociopolitical landscape of the country. “I am interested in the ideas of progress and the effects of history and violence in these territories and how this leads to a physical and psychological bleakness, all this taking place in a scenario of great natural exuberance,” he explains. Taken over the course of six years, these photographs record a personal view of the transitions and struggle of the people and the landscape.
