A selection of recent work by artist Tim Sandow (previously featured here). Based in Wuppertal, Germany, Sandow graduated from the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and the Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien in 2019. Inspired by mundane scenes of everyday life, Sandow’s paintings emphasize the setting of characters caught mid-action, notably indifferent to their surroundings. Unspeakable sadness is often mixed with outrageous banalities, capturing a duality of melancholy and poetic moments of solitude and silence. In this way, Sandow captures the disproportionate nature of our modern world — the sad reality that, while experiencing times of unparalleled wealth and life expectancy, we are also more anxious and polarized than ever before.
