A selection of recent work by Yongchul Kim. Born in Yeosu, South Korea and currently based in Stuttgart, Germany, Kim studied at the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design (ABK Stuttgart) under Cordula Güdemann, where he graduated in 2020. His paintings often depict scenes involving people, plants, flowers, landscapes, and animals–specifically faithful companions of humans like dogs and horses. While people tend to be the main subjects of his work, the figures are not based on models or people he knows; they are created entirely in his mind and develop a life of their own on the canvas. Ultimately, Kim’s work is characterized by vigorous brushstrokes and the feeling of constant change:
“I’m interested in showing that everything is in flux. There is no here and now, we’re in a state of perpetual change. A wave is coming, it takes us with it.”
