A series about how a place becomes a home by California-born photographer Brynne Quinlan. Currently based in Somerville, Massachusetts, Quinlan’s ongoing “Seven Hills” series is a physical survey of the city she now calls home. It is also a meditation on one’s search for connection. As Quinlan walks the four square miles of the Northeast’s most densely populated municipality she is actively searching for a better understanding of the intricacies of the city and the opportunity to create moments with the people that live there:
“I was struck by a James Baldwin quote I return to while I’m out working: ‘driven to find that long-lost friend, to grasp again, with fearful hope, the unwilling human hand… A human being could only be saved by another human being. I am aware that we do not save each other very often. But I am also aware that we save each other some of the time… perhaps something wonderful will happen, a miracle… of coherence and release’ reaching ‘the apprehension and acceptance of one’s own identity.’ I am seeking something similar, while reaching out to blindly brush another’s fingers.”
