“Impermanence/無常” by Artist Shuto Okayasu

Brooklyn-based Japanese artist Shuto Okayasu explores the theme of transience in his latest solo exhibition with Plato gallery. Okayasu received his BFA from Tokyo Zokei University and apprenticed under Takashi Murakami and Tomokazu Matsuyama. His artwork reflects a mix of eastern and western sensibilities as well as the reality and dreams of daily life.

Transience has been a theme in Japanese art for centuries. Here is recurs in Okayasu’s own life with the changing of the seasons in New York City, the birth of his children, the experience of live music that can never be repeated. Drawing from ukiyo-e, Nihonga, manga, and anime, as well as Impressionism and Western realist painting, Okayasu embraces a diverse mosaic of nature, people, pets, art and music. A beauty heightened by the awareness that life is constantly changing and, ultimately, fleeting.

“Impermanence/無常” is on display at Plato gallery in New York until November 7th.
