Aalana (ਆਲਣਾ), meaning “nest” in Punjabi, is an ongoing photographic project that reflects on home as a place of care, memory, and return. Made between my maternal grandparents’ house in Hoshiarpur and my family home in Punjab, the work emerged from years marked by uncertainty, examinations, migration, and personal change. Through quiet observations of domestic spaces, gestures, objects, and family relationships, the photographs explore how belonging is built through everyday rituals rather than grand events. The project considers the home not as a fixed location but as an emotional shelter that endures despite absence, loss, and movement. In a region where many leave in search of opportunities elsewhere, Aalana becomes a meditation on what remains, what is remembered, and what continues to hold us together.
