The Whole Self

The Whole Self brings together recent paintings and drawings featuring the Frocasians, gray-toned figures I began developing in the 1990s, inspired by my own interracial relationship and questions about race, gender, appearance, cultural difference, and how people read one another through the body. Over time, the Frocasians have become the visual language through which I examine how bodies are seen, judged, altered, and understood. In these newer works, bodies overlap, contain one another, and move through one another; faces repeat inside other faces and limbs cross between figures. The self becomes less singular and more composite, shaped by memory, relationships, vulnerability, and social forces. I will be an artist-in-residence at ISCP in New York, Dec. 2026–May 2027.
