I am particularly interested in landscape representation and Korean folklore. Landscapes are our most immediate and omnipresent representation of the world outside. Landscapes often draw the line between us, as a person or collective with an identity, and the outside world. While they appear to be outside, this outside itself appears in our consciousness, so landscapes can also be considered to be an integral part of who we are. If landscapes exist within us, they are not pure facts and objective realities out there but are inevitably constructed and modeled from our imagination and from the various narratives we use to make sense of reality. In my painting, I mix traditional folklore elements and intuitive shapes highlighting the “poetic freedom” we as humans have to redefine things within us.
