Asya in Afterlight is a colour series within the ongoing film-based project Afterlight, extending its experiments with double exposure into portraiture.
Using a small analogue Olympus, the images bring together Asya and fragments of the botanical world, photographed in separate exposures. The images emerge through the meeting of two distinct moments, with the unpredictability of the camera allowing each to shape the other.
The exposures conflate in an environment that unfolds around and through Asya: a space of associations and impressions that might otherwise remain invisible. The portrait posits her as someone inhabiting a world of her own, while remaining a part of a world that exists beyond her, indifferent to her presence. She takes up space among things that do not exist for her, that exist despite, in spite us.
