Beyond_the_gallop is a documentary photo project exploring the growing hobby
horsing scene – an unusual phenomenon at the intersection of sport, art, and youth culture. Originally developed in Finland, the discipline has become especially popular among young girls – while often being ridiculed or dismissed. The community is also growing in Germany, though it faces prejudice, mockery, and even open bullying.
The project follows athletes from private training sessions to national competitions,
documenting how hobby horsing is being redefined through social media, creativity, and a strong sense of community. It portrays a subculture that challenges traditional norms, breaks down gender roles, and creates spaces for self-empowerment.
