Camera Stories: Beki Cowey

It’s not my main camera, not close. I think of it as respite from my commercial portrait, fashion and product work with my Nikon DSLR.

My Olympus Trip 35 was my mom’s and I rediscovered it in the loft helping her to downsize. It has become my trusted friend, robust enough to hold its own in my handbag. A photographic meditation. Relinquishing control, a reminder to slow down and select what I shoot. Small and discrete, easy to go unnoticed, suited to the street. Loaded with the cheapest and grainiest b&w film.

This image “Jazz is Dead” was shot on the backstreets of Hollywood, not somewhere to walk alone with my pro kit. This camera opens the doors to documenting a world on the fringes of society, transient, shifting, and disappearing as gentrification eats up old neighbourhoods.
