CODE RED

This piece was done using biro pens and acrylic/ gouache paints, on A3 paper. I like to combine realism with bold vibrant block, or patterned backgrounds; creating a visual colour clash and pushing the pen work to the front of the page. I did this in 2020 during lockdown, when the future felt uncertain, climate change was on the news quite a lot and we were officially in a code red situation. It felt like people were not paying attention to it, disregarding it, even actively going against it: littering more, not recycling, pushing against paper straws etc. The hands represent these attitudes and the photo of the ram (taken by my friend) resonated so much with what was intended with this piece, the nihilistic stare looking right through us, while the earrings represent our human ignorance of capitalistic gain.
