I've been trying to find the balance between strong color and shape compositions as well as exploring the notion of having a painting be entirely composed of motifs or patterns. The idea grounding the exploration is the Gestalt design logic - that a whole image will read as much more than the sum of individual elements - so no matter how abstract a pattern, you should be able to sense the intention of the whole.
