As a photographer who also works a part-time corporate job, I was inspired to combine these two worlds into a project. This project is a portrait series of black women in their natural hairstyles who work corporate jobs. Because of the lockdown 2020, I wore my natural hairstyle for the first time ever to work. My sister occasionally wears weaves or wigs when she doesn’t have a protective hairstyle because she has three children and doesn’t have enough time in the morning to spend on her hair. Others might feel pressure to wear a hairstyle that’s more in line with the Eurocentric standards of beauty. With this project, I want to showcase the beauty of natural hair and that it IS professional. Hopefully, the images and stories of these wonderful women can inspire other black women to wear their natural hair occasionally.
