Deviations in Mary’s Room

Deviations in Mary’s Room is a multidisciplinary installation exploring the limits of perception through Frank Jackson’s thought experiment Mary’s Room and Hilary Putnam’s critique. It begins with 217 impossible questions, such as is it possible to see a colour without having learned it before?, forming a cartography connecting questions through thematic axes. This universe unfolds into a photographic investigation combining portraits, perceptual instruments, testimonies from people with synesthesia collected on Reddit, and AI-generated representations of their experiences. The project creates an epistemological loop between question and imagination, exploring what escapes visible perception. AI becomes a contemporary Mary, capable of processing knowledge but unable to access lived experience questioning limits of representation
