Die Bruin Mense

I am a Cape Town born documentary photographer and filmmaker whose work provides an intimate mirror to my underrepresented culture. My practice is rooted in the experience of Coloured people, shaped by a double displacement: through administrative racial classification, and later through forced removals under apartheid; yet this imposed category has been outlived by the people themselves, evolving into the culture I am part of. These photographs are from my series Die Bruin Mense (The Brown People). I photograph Coloured people because we remain underrepresented. Because I am one of them, my practice is built on patience and proximity. Earlier this year, I presented the exhibition, initially planned to run for one month, which was extended to three months due to its resonance with the public.
