Lucy Baxendale starts with a pen, pencil & no plan. Through automatic drawing, lines wander, collide and become unexpected shapes & characters. These drawings are then translated into porcelain sculptures, turning instinctive marks into tactile forms that feel strangely alive. The work sits somewhere between drawing, sculpture & ceramics, with each piece retaining the awkwardness, humour and spontaneity of its original mark. Baxendale also hides small electronic mechanisms within some of her sculptures, creating pieces that respond to human touch. The invitation to touch feels slightly rebellious in a gallery setting, but the reward is discovering that the sculpture responds. She is interested in what happens when a line escapes the page & takes on a life of its own.
