Lucy Baxendale is an artist working across drawing, ceramics and sculpture. Her practice begins with automatic drawing, allowing lines and forms to emerge instinctively before translating them into tactile porcelain sculptures. The work is playful, curious and often slightly strange, retaining the humour and spontaneity of the original marks. Alongside ceramics, Baxendale is exploring electronics and interactive sculpture, embedding sensors and mechanisms into seemingly static objects so they respond to human touch through movement, light or sound. Her work invites curiosity and participation, gently challenging the expectation that sculpture should be looked at but never touched. At the heart of the practice is a fascination with what happens when drawings leave the page, become physical, and begin to behave in unexpected ways.
