El Quinto Sol: The Mesoamerican Cosmos is a fully illustrated 56-card playing-card project by Mexican artist Juan Erazo / The Mythographer. Developed over several years through drawing, watercolor and research, it reinterprets Mesoamerican mythology, cosmology, codices, sculpture and archaeological sources through a contemporary visual language. Every court, number card, Ace, Joker, suit symbol, card back, type treatment and package was created specifically for the project. The work explores how ancient visual traditions can remain sources of contemporary imagination, not by reproducing the past, but by entering into conversation with it. No generative AI was used in the artwork.
