Maïté Marque (b. 1995) is a French-Dominican painter born and raised in Paris, where she still lives. With a background in graphic design and digital illustration, she brings a strong sense of vivid colours, composition and image-making to her painting.
Working from collages that combine personal photographs with images found in travel magazines about the Caribbean, as well as architecture and fashion magazines, she creates intimate, fictional scenes. These are mainly populated by figures who, like comic-book characters, seem to exist beyond the frame. Her work explores how bodies are seen and represented, while engaging with questions of identity, desire and her Caribbean heritage.
