On July 2, 2026 in an act of protest for Tibet's freedom, Lobga Rangzen set himself alight outside the United Nations headquarters in Manhattan, New York. In Tibetan tradition, the 49th day holds particular weight — it is understood as the passage of the spirit, a threshold observed with rite and remembrance. Hence on August 20, 2026, the Tibetan people in exile, living in Mcleodganj, India, organized a march in solidarity of their prominent activist.
This is not new ground for this town. It has carried the weight of exile for over six decades, and its streets know this particular grammar of protest — the flags, the slogans, monks marching, etc.
It was however, my first time witnessing the protest and I joined in with my camera, because I felt I could help show this to the world with my camera.
