Submission Painting

Haran Kislev

I am painting the landscapes of the Israeli borderland. These paintings express the changes in the rural landscapes and the differences between periods of peace and outbreaks of war. My paintings are, in a sense, a “hunting expedition,” expressing the hunter-hunted relationship of living in a danger zone. The color scheme I employ in my paintings is expressive and extends beyond natural colors. It is based on emphasizing color and over-saturating it to an extreme. The color saturation, as well as the abundance of material used, create an overwhelming reality, one that is difficult to contain and reflects my feelings about the place I live. This place is Be’eri, a kibbutz that lies close to the border with Gaza. It is a place that brings together in me a strong sense of home, pastoral quiet, danger and fear.
